01 Luscious Jackson - Citysong
This is probably the first song I remember hearing where I was aware that this was an all female band. Something about it sounded different than everything else I had heard on the radio up to that point in my life. They were the first band signed to the Beastie Boys Grand Royal label in 1993 J

02 Dolly Parton - Jolene
Put some more respect on Dolly's name. J

03 Donna Summer - I Feel Love (12" version)
Strobe Light Mandatory. A giant smash hit in 1977 by discos Queen/Star, but this track is so much more than just a hit song. Produced by the Italian Giorgio Moroder who made his name in Germany taking the dry electronic rhythm of Kraftwerk and turning it into a full blown groove. One of the great productions of modern music. This extended mix was released by Casablanca Records. B

04 Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway - Castilleja
I'd heard Molly Tuttle for a long time on folk music radio shows, but she's the kind of guitar talent that really doesn't make sense until you see her play live. Holy fuck this lady can play. O)))

05 Lydia Lunch & Big Sexy Noise - Kill Your Sons
I don't know why I picked so many covers this month... No... I do. Lydia Lunch and BSN take a song from Lou Reed and add a weirdness and violence to it that his more poetic delivery never did. Nothing against Lou, of course. O)))

06 Bratmobile - Gimme Brains
My wife, heh, is always talking up the virtues of Bratmobile. They were very formative for her in her teenage years. We can't wait for the day when our kid discovers them. JC

07 Siouxsie & The Banshees - The Passenger
I really think they fixed this song. O)))

08 ESG - UFO
The 4 Scroggins sisters from The Bronx NY never had the break through they hoped for but ended up as a huge influence for the underground music world that was soon to follow them. There would be no LCD Soundsystem without ESG. They were originally a RnB dance/party band called Emerald, Sapphire & Gold that decided to follow their own instincts to make magically unique records. Released in 1981 on 99 Records. B

09 Warpaint - Undertow
When I heard this song for the first time 10 or so years ago, it really left a mark. It gave me an impression that Warpaint was going on to bigger things. Even though I don't really love their newer music, they are still together and doing well for themselves, headlining big festivals all over the world. Not a bad gig if you can get it. J

10 L7 - Shitlist
A crunching growling ripping snarling snide song from the 1992 album Bricks Are Heavy. But it really caught my attention in a gruesome scene from the movie Natural Born Killers. (We see death from the bullets point of view in this scene.) Written by Donita Sparks and produced by Butch Vig post Nirvana. Released by Slash Records/Warner Bros. B

11 Castrator - Countess Bathory
Castrator put out a new album earlier this year that is such a leap forward from their earlier work. This is a cover of a classic Venom song, but I think it illustrates how their sound has evolved since 2015's "No Victim." Less of a low-fi grind to them than previous, and the production makes this pack more of a punch. O)))

12 Erykah Badu - Southern Girl
Erykah Badu is one of those rare artists who collaborates well with others but it always ends up sounding like her and no one else. This was a single released by Motown in 1999 and produced by human beat boxer Rahzel of the Roots. A mind-blowing track. B
