Weird & Wonderful 25

W & W 25 - track list and notes:

A playlist curated by Jim Oliver, Jim Crist & Bruce McGuire aka Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti

Graphic Design by Daniele Lanza
Introductory Audio Production by Bill McGuire

01 Spiritualized - The A Song (Laid in Your Arms)
From the new Spiritualized album Everything Was Beautiful. This whole record is dense and lush, it feels like there are 100 instruments on every track. Most of the time, it's hard for me to get into [Jason Spaceman] his new stuff, but I found myself really enjoying the sound of this one. JC

02 Pink Floyd - Fat Old Sun
A recent angle of mine has been trying to find Peel Sessions to listen to, which led me to this Pink Floyd song recorded at the BBC in July 1970. Can't quite describe what I like about this song, it just feels easy and comfortable. JC

03 The Smile - You Will Never Work In Television Again
2 dudes from Radiohead, a 3rd dude from Sons Of Kemet, and a record producer of note make up The Smile. This is brand new indie/alternative/underground rock music ala the 90s, but created for today. The album it comes from is called A Light For Attracting Attention and was released on the Self Help Tapes label. The title of this song gives me the image of some overblown suit yelling that phrase at some whipper-snapper who does not give one shit whether or not they ever work in television again. Cue the laughter. Thom Yorke Jonny Greenwood Tom Skinner Nigel Godrich. B

04 La Hell Gang - Sweet Dear
This one is special for my friend Will. He's moving to Chile soon, and is an avid Weird and Wonderful fan. La Hell Gang is from Chile, and while it appears that they aren't active anymore, I hope that he is successful in finding more bands like them in his search to see live music. JC

05 Local H - Here Comes The Rain Again
When you want to distill a song down to what guys like me love about it the most reliable way to do it is to have Local H cover it on one of their Awesome Mixtape EPs. Their 2-piece cover of "Da Funk" from Mixtape #2 fuckin' plows, but I also love how they can take a synth pop jam and turn it into something that you could really do some drunk crying to if you wanted to. O)))

06 Gravediggaz - Diary Of A Madman
Matt Perpetua put together a playlist of songs that came out in 1994 as an argument that it was the greatest year for music of all time and I'd forgotten all the stuff that came out that year. Did you remember that was the year that Lisa Loeb released "Stay" and Elton John released "Can You Feel The Love Tonight?" I don't know if I'm convinced, but this track does a lot of work to prove the argument. O)))

07 Low - White Horses
They just keep getting better. If you don't know Low they were known for playing a subtle-soft at times lilting rock music where quiet is the starting point. But little of that still exists in the trio based in Duluth MN. Now it's glued together with forward thinking and hard to describe production techniques (recorded in Northeast Minneapolis naturally) that turn their traditional beauty into unexplainable beauty. From their 13th album Hey What released in 2021 by Sub Pop records. B

08 Kills Birds - Ow
Been looking for more female energy in my guitar-driven rock songs lately and I found a deep well in these guys. Nothing too complicated here, just breakin' strings and jumping around real loud. O)))

09 Patti Smith Group - Ghost Dance
70's poetry harnessed to the powerful dance of the Sioux created to rise their people against the oppressors. Smith's version is coming from her christian background, which may be antithetical to the true spirit, but her belief in Mother Earth as the one true God keeps her within the original frame of belief. From her 1978 album Easter. The collection was produced by Jimmy Iovine and also features a song that Bruce Springsteen gave her. B

10 Homeskin - Fungal Sweets
"Catchy" isn't quite the word for what attracts me to this, and it's not a word you'd use to say why you like black metal, but it's amazing how this one-man outfit from Texas can make the clean parts hook you. The artist (Garry Bents) has another project/identity called Gonemage that does chiptune black metal, and you can almost hear that influence in Honeskin's clean, almost upbeat guitar work. O)))

11 Shabazz Palaces - Forerunner Foray
This came on the radio the other day when I was in the car with my kid, and she immediately said this song reminded her of college parties. She's not even 8, and has never been to a college party. JC

12 Dinosaur Jr - I Don't Wanna Go There
Distorted slabs of rock n roll noise, sullen sunken melodies, and blistering guitar solos are what the Massachusetts band is loved for. And this epic song with 2 guitar solos that stretch beyond where even J Mascis typically goes. From the bands 9th album Farm, released in 2009 by the label Jagjaguwar. B
