Weird & Wonderful 23

W & W 23 - track list and notes:

A playlist curated by Jim Crist, Bruce McGuire & Jim Oliver, aka The All New Charlie Angels

Graphic Design by Daniele Lanza
Introductory Audio Production by Bill McGuire

01 Sarah Louise - Hellbender

Musically I'm swinging between fuzzy rock and heavy psych, but sometimes you have to balance that out. There is a ton of interesting pastoral folk music happening right now. I generally tend to go for the instrumental stuff. First heard about Sarah Louise a few years ago, and find myself often going back to her 2020 album Floating Rhododendron. Its a great record to clear your head. JC

02 Ebo Taylor - Love And Death
There's this label called Greenway Records in Brooklyn. They're in the Levitation orbit. For a while, they were asking members of bands to put together playlists, and someone put this Ebo Taylor song on theirs. It's got a very lovelorn vibe to it, and gets stuck in your head. JC

03 The Rolling Stones - Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)
11 year old me bought this as a 7" single when it came out in 1973. My first interaction with the Rolling Stones. The B-side was called Dancing With Mr. D. My brother and I were obsessed with this record for quite a while. Bring up the song title to him some time. From the album Goats Head Soup released by the bands own Rolling Stones Records. B

04 Big Quarters - Lou Diamond
Was reminiscing about these guys with some folks on Twitter the other day and it still blows me away that they never really blew up. This song is 16 or 17 years old now and even though everybody involved with it remains well respected and accomplished in the scene I don't understand why they're not world famous. O)))

05 Amon Duul II - Archangels Thunderbird
The German art commune Amon Duul had a band in 1967 that ended up splitting into two bands who both claimed the name. One ended up referring themselves to Amon Duul II and became much more popular. Their 2nd album Yeti, released on Liberty (The Chipmunks were named after the 3 guys who started Liberty Records, Alvin, Simon and Theodore) in 1970, gave us this song and one of the cornerstones of the so called "Krautrock" musical movement. B

06 Denzel Curry - Walkin
A while back, I used to listen to A LOT of rap music. But then something happened, and I just sort of stopped. Its been a long time since something has grabbed me. This song from the new Denzel Curry album did it, though. Haunting hook, different cadences, its solid all around. JC

07 Victorious - Dinosaur Warfare
Obviously there is Power Rangers power metal. It's right there in the name. These guys just released the new single for the sequel to this album and it makes me smile very, very broadly. O)))

08 Diplo & Sidepiece - On My Mind
A dance party track that puts you in the same mind frame as when you hear Stardust, Justice, Daft Punk, or Underworld. A smooth thumping modern rumble that is a full step above the average EMD tracks. Even though a lot of his records are schlocky gunk, Diplo always delivers a great sounding record. Released as a single by the Higher Ground label in 2019. B

09 Minami Deutsch - Israeli Blues
My descent into the orbit of Japanese psych rock is continuing, and I have zero complaints about it. This song from Minami Deutsch covers a lot of enjoyable bases, all of which I enjoy immensely. JC

10 Joshua Ray Walker - Sexy After Dark
Never forget that urban Texas is always making new country songs about drinking in bars and getting laid. Some of them are richly satisfying. Also, you should check this guy out if you want to put on some easy-to-listen-to country music that kind of fades into the background while you do other things, then you randomly catch a lyric about somebody's grampa or a trucker's daughter and it makes you cry. O)))

11 Craig Finn - Messing With The Settings
Rhythm tracks are a really important part of my music listening enjoyment. Without that backing track its harder to infect me. This one (slow & loping) snagged me about a minute into the song. Then there are great lyrics, as usual from Finn, allowing you to picture all the characters and their beautiful flaws. From the album A Legacy Of Rentals released May 20 2022 conjointly by the Positive Jams and Thirty Tigers labels. This is the 6th solo album by Finn who is also the leader of The Hold Steady. B

12 Mantar - Hang 'Em Low (So The Rats Can Get 'Em)
I know I've linked these guys before for the fun grunge cover albums they've been producing recently, but they've got a new album coming out this summer and this is a great example of the straightforward, angsty guitar songs about killing people that deserve to die. O)))
