Weird & Wonderful Playlist 12

W & W 12 - track list and notes:

A playlist curated by Bruce McGuire, Jim Oliver & Jim Crist, better known as: Tres Leches

Graphic Design by Daniele Lanza
Introductory Audio Production by Bill McGuire

01 Johnnie Frierson - Miracles
Johnnie Frierson was a fringe musician in the Stax Records orbit in the early 60's. Then he was drafted and served in Vietnam. A while after returning, he started becoming involved in music again, hosting a radio show in his hometown, and eventually began recording. His new music did not take off. Recordings were found at a thrift store and eventually released. I dig the simplicity and optimism of this track. JC

02 Madlib - Loose Goose
Big, big Madlib fan over here, so my excitement was high when I heard that he was making an album with the help of Four Tet, who I am also a big fan of. I had a really hard time picking out a favorite track from the album, but went with this one because of it's dub influences and Snoop Dogg sample. JC

03 Local H - Turn The Bow
Love a good power duo, and it's tough to top one of the originals. Nobody layers guitars live like Scott Lucas, and this is a great example of what that wave feels like as it's crashing on you. O)))

04 Ten City - That's The Way Love Is (Deep House Mix/Extended)
I'm celebrating the new Chicago soccer team's name. O)))

05 Nina Simone - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
The powerful Ms Simone could play piano and sing like few others. The anger, sorrow and defiance in her sound was undeniable. Her music is probably as popular today as at any point in her career. From the album Broadway-Blues-Ballads released by Phillips in 1964. B

06 Japanese Breakfast - Diving Woman
For many years I've heard of Japanese Breakfast, but never actually heard anything from them. Listened to this track on a whim one day when I was hanging out with my kid, and it hit the spot. An almost seven minute burner, what more could you want! JC

07 Split Lip Rayfield - Hobo Love Song
I'll never be satisfied with the level of recognition that SLR receive. These guys are as punk as folk music gets, in my opinion, and really delivered on great speed bluegrass telling relatable stories for the whole life of the band. O)))

08 Skoal Kodiak - Teapot
I don't know if I can describe how deeply and irretrievably nuts I saw this band drive the 7th Street Entry. Remember that rave scene in Zion from whichever Matrix movie that was? Most people don't think noise music can turn 100 people into animals like that, but it can. I seen it. O)))

09 Archie Bell & The Drells - Tighten Up
One of the all-time groovinest, hopped-up, explode-the-party 7" singles of its time. Holy Sacred Toadstools this is quite the tune! All the way from Houston Texas on the Atlantic label in 1968. The backing track was originally created by the T.S.U. Toronadoes (credit where credit is due.) B

10 Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross - In the Hall of the Mountain King
There is a scene in the movie The Social Network where these upper class pricks from Harvard enter a regatta in London and get their ass handed to them. It all plays out to an electronic version of a brilliant song by Edvard Grieg - Peer Gynt Suite Number 1, Opus 46, written specifically for the play Peer Gynt from Norwegian Henrik Ibsen. From The Null Corporation in 2010. B

11 Nirvana - Love Buzz
I caught this on the radio one day and found myself wishing that there was a live version somewhere out there that was like 10 minutes long, then Bruce told me that Nirvana wasn't very good live. Still, that bass line and Kurt's guitar is just magic, and a guy can dream, right? JC

12 His Name Is Alive - Coldless
This is the "single" from the third and final chapter of archival releases by single-minded creator/musician Warren Defever. The music on this album was conceived and recorded when WDF was just a wee lad in a basement in Livonia MI. This last album is called Hope Is A Candle and was released in February 2021 by Disciples.
