1 The Brokedowns - Apocalypse Seaside Heights
The Brokedowns' records are all full of concise, hard-hitting punk jams with a really subtle, accurate. Most of them contain a beautiful character sketch of somebody who's not really making it. Every record has one like that that's about a minute long that I play on repeat sometimes for hours. This is the one from Species Bender (2010). (O))))

2 Joy Division - Twenty Four Hours
This is my very utmost favorite song from the English post punk masters. Lots of their songs get name checked, this one not so much. From the album Closer, their 2nd. Released in July 1980 on Factory Records, 2 months after singer Ian Curtis's suicide. And just a few weeks after that album came out they became a new band, New Order. (B)

3 Lesley Gore - You Don't Own Me
In 1963 she was staring down a boyfriend and pushing back. Pretty strong for a 17 year old in the early 60s. Especially a singer who had churned out fluff up until that point. Produced by Quincy Jones for Mercury Records. (B)

4 The Cool Greenhouse - Alexa
"Alexa, open the pod bay doors." This is from a forthcoming 7" single. Post punk, new wave, poetic, sardonic, and a little twitchy. Its a fun one. And any song that gives commands to AI is fine with me. Turn on your Alexa machine and crank this one up, then sit back to see what happens. (B)

5 Liv.e - Powaline
Can't really place what it is about this song. The beat is chunky and always sounds off kilter. When it speeds up at the end, it's just enough to make you think you're losing it, all the while there's this hypnotic voice leading you through it. (JC)

6 Buffy Saint-Marie - Gonna Feel Much Better When You're Gone
I got on a run with Buffy's more recent stuff (which is rad and fronts her native heritage a lot and you should check it out), and that made me look back at her older, more traditional folk/country stuff. Rad banjos here, in addition to just being a fun, happy song telling somebody to fuck off. (O))))

7 Bad Royale (feat. Suit Of Black) - Suit Of Black
Every once in a while I spend an afternoon being uncharacteristically productive at my job and it's the afternoon where I find a good soca playlist. I don't know a lot about the genre, but it keeps me moving because that's what it's for. (O))))

8 Uniform - Delco
Very noisy harsh industrial metal? I guess that'll do. I wish I had better words to describe this track. It certainly deserves better. The Brooklyn trio have a new album just out called Shame, and its on the Sacred Bones label. Delco refers to Delaware County, Pennsylvania, on the southeast side of Philadelphia. (B)

9 Bela Fleck And The Flecktones - Help On The Way
I'm a pretty big Grateful Dead fan, but sometimes I just can't stand how aimless it can be. This version of the Dead song from the Day of the Dead compilation a few years ago is super focused and sharp, which I really need right now, because everything else is just a fuckin mess. (JC)

10 Little Brother - For You
This song is like 18! years old and that kills me. Phonte is a dope rapper, and 9th Wonder's beat is just sunshine. This record was maybe one of the first where every beat was made in pro tools, which apparently made beats sound like sunshine back then. (JC)

11 Carlton Melton - Untimely/Electrified Sky
Something about this song seems off kilter but they just keep working through it. Grinding away for everyone's benefit (JC)

12 High On Fire - Into The Crypts Of Rays
There is nothing more Matt Pike in the world than covering a Celtic Frost song and replacing its opening choral synth hit with you roaring through a chorus effect for five seconds. (O))))
